Nespresso Breville vs DeLonghi: 2 Top Tier Manufacturers Compared [2023]

Are you in the market for a Nespresso machine but are confused on the price or the weird branding? This is our comparison of Nespresso Breville vs DeLonghi, two popular espresso manufacturers, where we aim to clear it all up.

We'll help you make the right decision by comparing these two machines, describing their similarities and differences, and pointing out their highs and lows.

As an avid coffee drinker, I've been through quite a few coffee machines, so I hope my experience helps you determine the right fit for you.

Are you ready to learn more about the Breville and DeLonghi Nespresso machines? Let's get into it!

A Brief bit of Confusion Cleared Up

Have you bought a Nespresso machine manufactured by a well-known brand but found Nespresso’s name imprinted on it instead? This has created a bit of confusion among DeLonghi and Breville enthusiasts.

Why doesn't DeLonghi and Breville appear branded on it if they are the ones manufacturing Nespresso machines?

See how this can be confusing?

You see, Nespresso isn’t the one who manufactures these machines. Nespresso may have invented the technology these machines use, but the brand outsources the manufacturing process to well-known and high quality companies like DeLonghi and Breville. For that reason, Nespresso retains brand ownership over these machines while touting the build quality of the brands it has chosen to build them.

That said, whichever Nespresso machine you intend to buy, I’m sure you’ll love it either way, given the reputation the machines have to uphold.

That's great and everything, but what is the difference between Nespresso Delonghi and Breville? Who else manufactures these devices?

Which Brands Manufacture Nespresso Machines?

Nespresso sells or licenses products from high quality, well-known coffee equipment manufacturers such as DeLonghi, Breville, Krups, Siemans, Miele, and Eugster/Frismag mostly in Europe.

Due to the high number of different manufacturers out there, you are bound to come across Nespresso machines sporting a myriad of designs and functionality. However, if you are in North America, chances are that most of the machines you encounter have been built by Breville or DeLonghi.

Let's look at these two brands.

Overview of DeLonghi

DeLonghi is an Italian coffee maker brand with a ton of experience building top-tier espresso machines. Using its existing knowledge of espresso-brewing, combined with Nespresso-pod technology, you can rest assured that DeLonghi Nespresso machines will perform well.

The main difference between the DeLonghi espresso machines and Nespresso machines is that DeLonghi, on its own, excels in manufacturing bean-to-brew systems while Nespresso utilizes a pod mechanism similar to Keurig.

The Nespresso-branded Delonghi machines usually include an integrated hot milk system and large water reservoirs.

Overview of Breville

Breville is an Australian coffee maker brand that gives you more manual control over espresso shots like cappuccinos, americanos, and lattes.

Breville is prominent for its articulating steaming wands, but parallels as a brand that is well-known for bean-to-brew espresso machines, among many other types of kitchen appliances.

Comparison between Nespresso Breville vs Delonghi

Before we talk about the differences between the two manufacturers, let's first look at what makes them the same. You may be surprised to learn how similar both manufacturers are.

Mirrored Specs

Both brands produce similar-quality Nespresso coffee. The reason is simple: Nespresso provides tech schematics to which each manufacturer must adhere.

In this respect, both DeLonghi and Breville are following the specification requirements set by Nespresso. As a result, they’ll make machines that use the same general technology with mostly identical technical specifications.

For example, both Breville and DeLonghi machines use the exact same pressure rating, capsule mechanisms, brewing ratio, water reservoir specifics, and brewing temperature.

The outcome? You'll brew the same quality of the coffee no matter which machine you choose.

Similar Brewing Size

The brewing systems employed by the Nespresso DeLonghi and Breville coffee machines is similar. They use centrifusion technology and barcode reading. Both brands produce exquisite coffee in 5oz, 8oz, 14oz, and 18oz cup sizes using Nespresso proprietary capsule pods.

Different Appearance

There is one common difference among all machines built by Breville and DeLonghi. Their APPEARANCE.

Design aesthetic closely ties to the manufacturer's branding to the Nespresso Machine and is the MAIN reason someone should choose a Breville over a DeLonghi or visa versa.

While the design differences may be subtle, the straightforward and sleek design of a DeLonghi Nespresso machine will fit in much better with other DeLonghi machines with a similar appearance in your kitchen.

Other than their appearance there is no difference in the internal apparatus of these machines.

You may wonder why buy a DeLonghi or Breville Nespresso machine at all. Since these brands have their own machines, doesn't it make sense to just go for the original? Sure, if you love the process of making an espresso.

Nespresso technology aims to simplify and make more convenient, the process of preparing the perfect espresso shot. But at what price?

In exchange for ease of use and convenience, you are opting for a pod-based system which may not be the best solution for the Earth conscious, unless you buy Earth-friendly Nespresso pods.

Which Nespresso Products do DeLonghi and Breville make?

Both Breville and DeLonghi produce the following Nespresso machines and most of these models come with a Nespresso Aeroccino milk frother. You'll notice that most of the aesthetic is similar, but there are slight differences in bezel and form-factor.

Nespresso Inissia – Breville vs Delonghi

DeLonghi Inissia

Breville Inissia

The Similarities:

The two Nespresso Inissia models work very similarly in that they both brew an excellent espresso in under a minute with a nice layer of crema. I did not notice any real difference between the two when it comes to brew quality or time.

The Differences:

The Delonghi we tested was virtually silent, but the Breville version made loud vibration noises as it brewed and extracted the espresso. I don't suppose anything was wrong with it, just my experience. I think this isn't that big of an issue, but could be a factor for you.

Nespresso Pixie – Breville vs Delonghi

DeLonghi Pixie

Breville Pixie

The Similarities:

Both models come with foldable cup support to clear room for larger containers. They are both made from high quality materials, feel durable, and the extra metal panel on the side adds a great aesthetic to both models.

The Differences:

The Breville Pixie has a slightly larger water reservoir and is a little lighter, though the DeLonghi Pixe has a slightly faster heat-up time. The DeLonghi we tested leaked a little when the tank was completely full. This is easy enough to avoid, but there were no problems with the Breville.

Nespresso Essenza Mini – Breville vs Delonghi

DeLonghi Essenza Mini

Breville Essenza Mini

The Similarities:

Nespresso Essenza Mini by Breville and Delonghi is a perfect space-saving option. It also has a 19-bar pump pressure for its extraction method and It has a three minutes eco-mode after the last brewing. The best part: it will automatically shut off after nine minutes.

The Differences:

Nespresso Essenza Mini by Delonghi comes in black, lime, and red colors. While Breville comes in black.

Nespresso CitiZ – Breville vs Delonghi

DeLonghi CitiZ

Breville CitiZ

The Similarities:

Nespresso Citiz Breville and Delonghi come in a slim and compact design with two programmable cup sizes. Both models have an adjustable water tank and built-in Aeroccino milk frother. Whether it is Nespresso Citiz by Delonghi or Breville both give you two coffee alternatives, namely, lungo and espresso.

The Differences:

Nespresso CitiZ by Breville has red and silver options, while the DeLonghi has black, white, and chrome finishes. Also, Delonghi has a higher spout than Breville.

Nespresso Vertuo – Breville vs Delonghi

DeLonghi Vertuo

Breville Vertuo

The Similarities:

Both models have an adjustable cup system that allows you to adjust the cup support from the dispenser nozzle. This is a great feature for those of us who like to make iced Americanos right in the glass. They both also have a descale feature. The espressos are great from both models.

The Differences:

The DeLonghi Vertuo has a larger water capacity, which is great for brewing a couple beverages in one filling, but there again with the leaking. When completely full, the DeLonghi Vertuo model tends to leak a bit, while the Breville seems to never have any issues with leaking and it heats up nearly twice as fast.

Nespresso VertuoPlus – Breville vs Delonghi

DeLonghi VertuoPlus

Breville VertuoPlus

The Similarities:

Apart from centrifusion tech and barcode reading, Nespresso Vertuo Plus Breville and Delonghi have motorized opening and closing, automatic coffee pod ejection, and automatic off mode.

The Differences:

Nespresso Vertuo Plus by Delonghi has a chrome finish with a flat top and black, gray, ink black, red, titan, and LE black matte colors. While the Breville one has a rounded top and has a gray and black matte finish.

Nespresso VertuoPlus Deluxe – Breville vs Delonghi

DeLonghi VertuoPlus Deluxe

Breville VertuoPlus Deluxe

The Similarities:

Both machines produce a flawless espresso, but have the ability to make several other espresso beverages. While I didn't try every combination of setting for both machines, they seem to operate similarly. I really enjoy how this machine can prepare multiple cups before having to refill. This feature alone makes this my favorite model out of all that we tested.

The Differences:

In this test, we noticed that the Breville was the one with a leaking problem, but it was minor and likely user error on my part. The Breville heats up a little faster, but is nearly twice as heavy as the DeLonghi. The metal accents on the Breville also make it a bit more expensive than the Delonghi. The Delonghi is super quiet and leak-free.

Nespresso Vertuo Next – Breville vs Delonghi

DeLonghi Vertuo Next

Breville Vertuo Next

The Similarities:

Apart from centrifusion tech and barcode reading, Nespresso Vertuo Next has the connectivity feature, which means you can connect your machine to your Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Also, it comes with Aeroccino 3 by Breville and Delonghi.

The Differences:

Nespresso Vertuo Next by Breville comes with a sleek chrome finish, in light gray and red. Delonghi comes with an aesthetic design, including black with metallic rose gold, white, dark gray, and black matte. The best part: their machines will give you complimentary welcome kits for the first use.

Get the Most Affordable Espresso Machine in 2023

Finding the best cheap espresso machine in this pricey market can be a toughie. And we can imagine that market is filled with expensive espresso machines. Now we can’t guarantee a better economic situation in the future but we can give you a variety of cheap espresso machines for all the coffee lovers. So you can enjoy top-notch espresso from the comfort of your home without paying big bucks to cafes.

In this article, we’ll be sharing some of the top most Affordable Espresso Machines and answering some of the most commonly asked questions about a shot of espresso.

1. Essenza Mini Espresso Machine by Nespresso

Nespresso Essenza Mini is great for coffee capsules. It’s small, compact, and stylish, and it’s designed to brew excellent coffee with Nespresso capsules. It’s also far less expensive than Mr Coffee. If you don’t want to incur the money, this is an excellent alternative to enjoy a good cup of coffee.

However, keep in mind that it is intended for capsules. This is not the espresso machine for you if you want loose grinds. The Mr Coffee may be used with capsules or ground coffee, which is one of the reasons we lowered it to second place. It’s also quite pricey in comparison to the rest in the field. It may brew excellent capsule coffee, but it will set you back a hefty buck.

2. Budget PEM350 Premium Espresso Machine

An excellent choice for an espresso machine is the Premium Espresso & Cappuccino Maker PEM350, which offers exceptional value for the price. If you want to get the most out of your money, choose this model. It doesn’t have features to make double shots, and mocha chai lattes quickly, but it makes a decent shot of espresso.

It also has regular pricing that is difficult to beat in this class of items, which is why we ranked it as the greatest value

It has certain drawbacks because it is helpful for budgets. We don’t like the frothing wand. Those, in any case, can be problematic and readily clogged. It can also be difficult to get it to operate, and the components wear out quickly if it is used frequently as its a compact machine.

3. Espresso machine & Coffee Maker Barsetto

If we were asked to rank portable espresso makers and the best affordable espresso machine. It may not produce as wonderful an espresso as our finest countertop equipment, but it produces an excellent cup of coffee on a consistent basis. We also enjoy the way it looks. We’d even say it’s the Ferrari of handheld espresso makers. It’s also made to operate with K-Cups and coffee capsules, so if you have a Nespresso or Keurig as your primary coffee maker, you can use those coffee pods in it.

One disadvantage of all portable espresso and coffee machine is that you must boil the water separately. Of course, that’s the price you pay for portability, but it’s still something to keep in mind if you’re shopping for a home unit. While it can brew with loose grounds, doing so in this maker can result in an inconvenient mess.

4. Budget Espresso Machine Expert Coffee Classy Plus Espresso Machine by Lavazza

The Lavazza Expert Classy Plus Machine comes next. We recommend this machine as a fantastic single-serve espresso maker for several reasons. One of them is a great budget espresso maker.

It’s compact enough to fit in tight quarters, features multiple brewing options, and comes with a separate milk frother to help you achieve the perfect espresso crema. Unlike other cheap espresso machines

Unfortunately, it is limited to Lavazza Expert capsules. Yes, extra pills are required. Nevertheless, for a reasonable price, you get an affordable espresso machine with all the functionality of a high-end model to make some delicious espresso drinks.

The Lavazza is a good choice if you want an affordable espresso machine that is easy to use and comes with espresso pods. As an all-in-one cappuccino, espresso, and coffee maker, you can make practically any drink. It’s excellent if you want a macchiato, cappuccino, or ordinary espresso at the office or home.

5. One Touch Espresso Maker by Mr Coffee

Get the Affordable Espresso Machines with the 2022 edition.

Want to get your hands on a quality espresso machine for as little as possible? If you don’t want to spend more than $100 on a great shot of espresso with crema on top, the Hamilton Beach espresso machine is worth considering.

This cheap espresso machine is 13 inches long, 8.2 inches wide, and 12.31 inches high. If you want something that won’t create a lot of mess, this will suit most counters. With a water reservoir that can hold up to 40 ounces of water, a full tank can produce 8 to 10 cups of espresso. The higher the pressure, the higher the quality. You’ll get a strong flavour with 15 bars of pressure that will have you demanding the next cup. Simply load the coffee, fill the water tank, and push the button, and it will brew rapidly.

6. Budget Espresso Machine DeLonghi EC155

We strongly suggest this espresso machine due to its low price and outstanding features. If you’re looking for the best budget espresso machine and want something that tastes like espresso from a coffee shop, this is your best bet.

The frame of this small machine is made of stainless steel. It’s durable, however the machine is heavy to carry and store more like local coffee shop espresso makers.

The amazing 15 bars of pressure is the major reason to think about this best budget espresso machine. It has the same performance as some commercial models, and it has a flavor close to the espresso you can buy at your neighborhood coffee shop.

Another notable element is the controls. You can modify the settings using two dials to make the perfect coffee drink while brewing espresso.

This espresso machine can brew either a single or double shot. There’s a filter holder for one or two espresso shots, or you can use ESE pods.

We enjoy how this system can maintain a steady temperature in the water reservoir. When preparing more than one cup, it saves time. There is a two-shot brewing cycle that allows you to get two espresso shots without having to wait.

The machine includes a manual steam wand. This steam wand or built in milk frother will turn your espresso shots into a cappuccino, you’ll need to add the frothing milk in a separate container while holding it beneath the wand.

The built-in feature that adds steamed milk automatically is more convenient, but this manual feature allows you full control over the amount of milk you add when you brew espresso.

Cleaning is rather simple. You can take out different parts, like the water tank and the part that holds the filter. These pieces can be washed in the dishwasher. Overall, this best espresso machine gives the most value for its price tag.

7. Budget Espresso Machine Sboly Steam

This best-budget espresso machine is one of the most cost-effective options we researched. It’s a fantastic buy for the money, and the small size is practical. However, you should be aware that this machine operates without the usage of a pump. You will only receive 3.5 bars of pressure with this espresso maker.

This machine produces a nice shot of espresso, but it lacks the rich aroma and amount of crema that you can expect when purchasing a shot of espresso at your favourite coffee shop.

The controls are straightforward. Simply turning a knob causes the machine to begin brewing. For the price, there are some unique features, such as a built-in thermometer to keep track of the water temperature.

There’s also a built-in scale to assist you to weigh the coffee grounds, and the machine comes with a steam wand to froth milk. You can prepare one to four cups of espresso, and while this machine does not operate with ESE capsules, coarse coffee grounds work well. So you can use a variety of coffee grounds and froth milk with this best-budget espresso machine.

8. Gevi Espresso Makers

Get the Affordable Espresso Machines with the 2022 edition.

This espresso machine is highly recommended due to its amazing value being one of the best budget espresso machines. It remains inexpensive and offers with an excellent range of features.

Gevi’s espresso machine has a pump that delivers 20 bars of pressure. If you want a machine that can extract more oil and richness from the coffee beans, this is the best inexpensive espresso machine.

It boils water rapidly, and a single serving of espresso can be prepared in fewer than forty-five seconds using it. It includes a flexible filter holder. You can use any of the two portafilter attachments for either a single or double shot, and ESE pods can also be used.

The machine has two heating components that may be controlled independently to alter the temperature of the water and milk. There is a frothing wand that rotates, and it works wonderfully for creating latte art and cappuccino art.

9. Espresso and Cappuccino Maker IMUSA

This is the greatest inexpensive espresso machine for beginners who can’t pay more. It’s one of the cheapest espresso machine alternatives available, with an outstanding set of capabilities for the price.

This machine is compact, lightweight, and portable. It’s ideal for casual espresso lovers or those with a small kitchen.

It has the ability to generate a maximum of five bars of pressure. Remember that more costly machines may generate greater pressure to extract more oil and flavours from coffee beans, but 5 bars of pressure is remarkable for the price range.

You can use freshly ground coffee in place of ESE capsules with this machine. The controls are straightforward, and there are some light indications. A built-in steam feature allows you to add milk to your beverage to produce a latte or cappuccino.

The machine is easy to clean because to the removable drip tray. As a coffee lover, you should know that a drip tray is important to keep the station clean after frothing milk.

10. Personal Espresso Maker BELLA

Bella’s Personal Espresso Machine is a time machine. It’s the cheapest of the espresso makers we looked at, so if you’re looking for the cheapest option, this is it. Furthermore, it is simple to clean.

However, espresso machines have improved to the point where you can fit a few more features into the frame for the price of one, and the quality is roughly equivalent to what inexpensive models have produced 15 years ago. You can now buy far nicer coffee for a few dollars more. We also dislike the way it is built.

For these reasons, we must assess this Bella model as a poor value, despite the fact that it is the most reasonable in terms of raw pricing.

FAQs

What is the average number of BARs in an espresso machine?

There are many high-end espresso machines with more than 15 BARs. However, as so many baristas will tell you, purchasing a machine with more than 15 BARs of pressure may be a waste of money. Many espresso machines rarely, if ever, employ pressures greater than 11 BAR.

Many low-cost espresso machines only produce the appropriate 9 BARs of pressure. Higher-quality espresso machines will feature 15 BARs. Those 15 BAR espresso machines are powerful enough to start brewing with 10-11 BARs of pressure, producing superb coffee.

If I were to make some advice, I’d think that purchasing a quality espresso machine with 9 or 15 BARs would be the greatest way to learn how to utilize it properly and successfully.

How To Descale Nespresso Vertuo [Step-by-Step Guide]

Does your coffee taste bad despite the perfect recipe? It might be the time to descale your Nespresso vertuoline machines.

What is descaling?

Descaling is a method to remove excessive minerals compiled up in your Nespresso machine that is not good for your health. Descaling comes with the proper method that includes specific dos and don'ts.

If you don’t treat it on time, the minerals stored can affect your health, the quality of coffee, and the machine's water flow. There are certain signs which indicate the need for descaling, like the difficulty in pumping water.

There are many ways to descale your machines, but it is advisable to follow the Nespresso descaling instructions recommended by the Nespresso.

Descaling should be done after every 3 months or after the use of 300 capsules. If you use hard water, it is advisable to do it more often.

If you are unsure about the level of minerals in the water, you can opt for a low-cost water testing kit.

How do you know your Nespresso Vertuoline needs descaling?

The machine has a light that indicates the need to descale. The light appears green when your machine is ready to use. If the light appears orange or red, it is high time to descale it or check the water supply.

The VertuoPlus indicates the light that is half red and half green. The green color might look yellow. Moreover, on the VertuoNext, Vertuo and Evoluo there will be an indication of orange blinking light.

Apart from this, if your machine is no longer serving hot coffee or pumping water, it is another sign to get its maintenance done as soon as possible.

The descaling process usually takes twenty minutes to clean. The descaling process continues until it is completed, so you should keep all your supplies ready beforehand.

Before you perform the descaling procedure, you should always check the instruction guide for descaling your Nespresso Vertuoline machine to avoid any complications.

Things you require before descaling:

Before you start the descaling process, you should take all the safety measures. If the machine is unplugged during the procedure, it will automatically start the process again once it is activated.

To descale your Nespresso machines, you should have the following things:

  • Each container has the capacity to hold 21 ounces of liquid.
  • Nespresso Vertuo descaling solution of your choice.
  • 17 ounces of water is required to dilute the descaling agent.
  • The same amount of water - 17 ounces is needed to flush out your coffee machine.

Why Descaling Nespresso Vertuoline With Vinegar Is A Bad Idea

People wrongly assume that machines should be descaled by using vinegar, but it is the most harmful way of getting rid of limescale from the machine. Vinegar tends to damage the internal parts of the coffee machine like rubber gaskets and seals.

Moreover, it is hard to rinse and get rid of the smell and taste that vinegar leaves in your coffee machines.

You should never clean the Nespresso Vertuoline machine with vinegar because of its acidic nature. It can wear down the metal of the machine risking the leakage of the unit.

It can also harm the longevity of machines. You can use many alternatives in place of vinegar that can keep your machine safe.

Nespresso descaling solution:

Nespresso descaling solution is a solution kit specially designed for cleaning purposes. You can use it in descaling Nespresso Vertuoline plus and all other models. You should always opt for the kit instead of using other harmful Descalers.

The solution will remove the excessive limescale. Each kit comes with 100 ml sachets of descaling solution for all the models. One sachet is enough for a single-use.

It is a harmful product as it has lactic acid that can cause severe health issues like causing serious eye damage or skin irritation. You should handle these products with care.

Impresa Coffee Machine Descaler:

If your Nespresso Vertuoline plus or Nespresso Vertuoline goes half green and half red - it is the right time to use Impress Descaler. It is the top-selling discolor as it uses citric and sulfamic acids. Both the chemicals are gentle on aluminum and metal.

You can use it twice, one bottle for each use. It is designed to ensure the good quality coffee and extended life-line of your machine. It is a simple liquid that is poured directly into the machine and water. It can also protect your machine from corrosion.

Nespresso Vertuoline Descaling Instructions:

The main question arises, how do you clean Nespresso Vertuoline? Like any other coffee machine, Nespresso Vertuoline also needs high maintenance to ensure the taste of the coffee.

This is why it is important to learn how to clean Nespresso Vertuoline so that you can do it when needed.

What To Do If the Light Stays On After Descaling?

The descaling light should work perfectly if you follow the right instructions throughout the process. There is no need to worry about anything if you perform all the steps perfectly.

If the Nespresso Vertuoline light stays on, it is suggested that there is an extra scale built up inside your machine. This usually happens when you do not clean your machines thoroughly.

When you are facing such a situation, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do you generally descale when you first see the descale light?
  • Do you clean your machine more often than once every three months?
  • Do you always use clean filtered water?

If your answer to any of the above questions is no, you should deep clean your machine, open and close it again to see the status of the descaling light. If the issue does not resolve, you might need to reset your Nespresso.

FAQs:

How do I know if my Nespresso machine needs descaling?

If you are wondering when you should descale your coffee machine, check the following indications:

  • Your coffee has a burning taste.
  • Your machine is making unusual sounds when you are using it.
  • Your machine is pouring slower than usual.
  • Your coffee is not as hot as usual.

What can I use instead of Nespresso descaler?

If you don't have the descaling kit and solution, you can use vinegar or citric acid  instead. If you are opting for citric acid, you will need to adjust the acid-water ratio.

One part should be acid, while the 20 parts should be water. For the vinegar, it should be a 50/50 ratio. You should choose the largest volume brew cycle and then press start.

Place an old pod as your machine will not work without it. If you are using vinegar, 4-5 water-only cycles are necessary to get rid of smell and taste.

What happens if I don't descale my coffee machine?

Your Nespresso can be affected greatly if you don't descale it. Minerals' scale build-up inside the machine will affect the quality and longevity of the machine.

If the water doesn't reach its optimal brewing temperature, it is nearly impossible to extract the full flavor from your coffee beans.

The excessive minerals stored can clog the flow of water, and if they are not removed, the machine might stop working.

Lastly, the taste of the coffee will not be good enough to enjoy.

Why is the Nespresso descaling kit a must-have?

The descaling kit is a must-have because it gently removes the excessive limescale without harming the machine. Descaling liquids are made in a way that does not affect the machine. Using alternatives can severely damage your machine and affect its longevity.

Nespresso VertuoLine Vs Original Line: Which one to choose?

Whether you like classic filter coffee or mixed coffee beverages, you can get any drink with a brewing machine and a Nespresso pod. Nespresso models are durable, have a sleek design, and come in a variety of colors.

These machines work with coffee pods to provide you with coffee-house-style espresso drinks. Also, these machines are manageable and easy to use.

Nespresso Original vs Nespresso Vertuo

Nespresso has partnered with leading manufacturers like Breville, Kitchenaid, DeLonghi, Krups, Sage, and Magimix to specialize in making Nespresso machines. Nespresso Vertuo and Original are the two powerhouse machine lines in capsule brewing.

We will discuss both of these lines in detail, which will help you choose a machine that will better satisfy your coffee needs.

Pros

  • You have a wide variety of flavors available.
  • Some OriginalLine machines have milk frothers.
  •  These machines are easy to use.
  • The coffee pods of OriginalLine are affordable.

Cons

  • You can only get two types of coffee.
  • You cannot get coffee options with longer shots.
  • The water pumping sound is loud.

The OriginalLine machines pump hot water through coffee pods to provide exceptional espresso, Ristretto, Double Espresso, and lungo drinks. Some models of OriginalLine machines have a milk frothing technology that lets you create fantastic quality cappuccinos and lattes.

The OriginalLine devices have fewer options available in brewing and water volume. But they have more coffee pods options. You can mix any coffee-flavored pods to create a drink you like.

The OriginalLine machine uses smaller pods that make shorter coffee shots. You can use Nespresso OriginalLine capsules from third parties like Maud, Gourmesso, and Artizan.

Pros

  • You can make five different types of coffee drinks.
  • These work best for black coffees.
  •  These machines are easy to use.
  • The device operates quietly.
  • It works efficiently with barcoded Nespresso capsules.

Cons

  • There is a smaller selection of machines.
  • The pods for VertuoLine models are more expensive than OriginalLine.
  • Fewer flavor options available.
  • The VertuoLine device does not have a built-in milk frother.

The VertuoLine machines have five different cup sizes. You can make espresso, double espresso, a gran lungo, an Americano, and an alto drink. VertuoLine devices do not have a milk frother, so making cappuccinos, lattes, or other milk-based mixed coffee drinks would not be excellent.

These machines have an advanced barcode system. The device carries out specific instructions for extracting a capsule. The VertuoLine uses a lower temperature to brew a mild taste of coffee.

There is no built-in milk frother in VertuoLine, but you can buy one separately at a discounted price. The overall cost of a VertuoLine is less than an Original Line machine. With VertuoLine, you can make tasty coffee drinks with one touch, regardless of the size.

Nespresso VertuoLine vs. Original Line

Coffee lovers eagerly looks for the best Nespresso machine available. The main difference between OriginalLine and VertuoLine is the pods. You will notice different flavors, shapes, and brewing methods. The VertuoLine machines came out in 2014 to lure people of North America toward coffee drinks.

Types Of Drinks

The Nespresso OriginalLine has six main capsule varieties Intenso, Espresso, Lungo, Decaffeinato, Master Origin, and Crafted for Milk. Each of these capsules has different caffeine intensity, taste, brewing method, and body.

Brew Sizes:

The brew sizes vary between the VertuoLine and OriginalLine machines. With a VertuoLine device, you can get a 1.35 oz espresso, 2.7 oz of double espresso, 5 oz of Gran Lungo, 7.8 oz of regular coffee, and 14 oz of Alto extra large coffee. With Vertuo Next machine, you can get 18 oz of coffee in a single-serve.

On the other hand, with an OriginalLine machine, you can brew 0.85 oz of ristretto, 1.35 oz of espresso, and 3.7 oz of Lungo. These machines cannot go more than 3.7 oz for Lungo.

Barcode Scanning System:

The VertuoLine devices have a barcode system that scans the information on the capsule. The barcode helps to brew the water flow, temperature, infusion time and identifies the rotation speed for each capsule.

The machine can tailor the extraction parameters based on your coffee pod with the barcode system. The disadvantage of the barcode system is that the device does not work with an unlicensed Nespresso coffee pod.

Milk Frothing

It is always good to have a little bit of frothing on your coffee. Most of the OriginalLine machines have a built-in milk frother. This technology does not come in the VertuoLine models. However, you can get a separate milk frother and use it with the VertuoLine machine.

Taste:

The OriginalLine devices have 19 bars of pressure with which you can craft a traditional espresso drink. The VertuoLine has the feature to make both an espresso and regular coffee drink.

One of the most contributing factors to a coffee’s taste is the machine’s temperature to extract the flavors. The OriginalLine devices use higher temperatures than VertuoLine machines. Using high temperature helps the OriginalLine to extract an adequate amount of flavor.

The Capsules:

The shape is the primary difference between the VertuoLine and OriginalLine capsules. The VertuoLine pods come with a broader dome, while the original capsules come in a smaller size with cup shapes. In the VertuoLine, you will find more capsule capacity that helps you get a broad range of capsule size options.

Capsule Extraction Method:

Nespresso machines, OriginalLine and VertuoLine, follow a single-step extraction process for capsule brewing. The OriginalLine machine works with a pressure-based system that helps extract the oils from the coffee grounds.

On the other hand, the VertuoLine machine works with a centrifugal method. Centrifusion is a rapid pod rotation that helps yield a thick and dense crema.

Variety Of Machines:

In the Nespresso OriginalLine, you get a variety of 21 models, each with different sizes and functions.

The OriginalLine machines have advanced technology, in which you can have a tiny Pixie to Lattisisma. In VertuoLine, there are five basic models Vertuo, VertuoPlus, Evoluo, Vertuo Next, and VertuoPlus Deluxe. All of these machines have the same features. When it comes to the variety of devices, The OriginalLine beats VertuoLine.

Price:

The price of all VertuoLine machines covers the same budget.

On the other hand, OriginalLine machines can vary in cost. The cost of an OriginalLine machine can go around $115 to $600, depending on the model and size you select. At the same time, the price of the VertuoLine machines starts from $140. If you choose to buy a separate milk frother with them, it can cost around $250.

Our Verdict

Being the best coffee brewing brand, Nespresso offers you a variety of options for a capsule-based system. You can easily find a machine that serves your brewing needs.

The Nespresso machines, OriginalLine, and VertuoLine excel in brewing supreme quality coffee. However, there are some points to keep in mind.

If you choose to buy an OriginalLine machine, you will get only espresso and espresso-based drinks. You will be able to use Nespresso and third-party capsules, which will help you save up on costs.

With the pressure-based extraction process, you enjoy a fantastic espresso drink.

If you select to buy a VertuoLine machine, you can get the advantage of making both espresso-based drinks and coffee. These machines have a clever barcode reading system with which you can brew any style and size of the cup. The centrifugal extraction method creates a thick foam on your coffee.

Choosing a coffee-making machine depends on the type of coffee you prefer. If you prefer longer shots of espresso drinks, VertuoLine will be an ideal option for you. If you are one of those who love quicker shots or mixed coffee drinks, then the OriginalLine machine will be your best fit.

How Much Nespresso Caffeine Content has a Coffee Pod?

Nespresso is one of the most popular coffee capsule providers around the globe. They offer a wide range of caffeine that you can choose according to your taste. A Nespresso pod is a capsule you can use to make coffee using coffee machines.

These capsules use aluminum packaging to help protect the freshness and aroma of the coffee. Each Nespresso capsule consists of fine-ground coffee beans. The amount and type vary according to the type of the capsule.

If you are a coffee person, you might wonder how much caffeine you consume. You will find a list of possible answers on the internet. There is no specific answer to that. The answer can vary depending on the type of capsule you are using.

There are two types of pods Original Line and Vertuoline. These pods have different coffee and caffeine levels that, do they taste amazing. With a perfect balance of taste and intensity, you can select the flavor of your coffee from the numbers ranging from 1 to 11.

What Affects the Caffeine in Nespresso pod?

Now that you know about the wide caffeine range offered by Nespresso, you might wonder how to determine the amount of caffeine in your cup.

Some of the important points to consider are as follows.

  • Importance of Capsule Style: The amount of caffeine depends on the capsule. There is less caffeine in an espresso drink than a double espresso drink. According to Nespresso’s given guidelines, caffeine ranges from 50-100 mg in a double espresso. Caffeine content is between 120 and 200 mg in the Nespresso Gran Lungo capsule.
  • OriginalLine vs. VertuoLine caffeine: The Nespresso machine is an important point to consider. Nespresso machines use OriginalLine or VertuoLine capsules. In an OriginalLine coffee pod, there is an average of 60 mg caffeine, whereas, in a Lungo capsule, there is about 80 mg. In a VertuoLine capsule, the average caffeine ranges from 105 to 150 mg. We can assume that the OriginalLine has less caffeine than VertuoLine capsules. But it can also vary based on the type of ground coffee used.
  • Decaf: You might wonder that a decaf capsule does not have caffeine. A decaf capsule has very low caffeine than a regular coffee pod, around 12 mg. It will not impact caffeine-sensitive individuals.
  • Intensity vs. caffeine: There is a myth that the stronger your coffee is, the more caffeine it has. According to people, strong coffee is more flavorsome. However, you cannot use the flavor element to define the caffeine content. Nespresso mentions the intensity of all of its caffeinated capsules. A strong coffee drink does not have more caffeine than a lighter coffee.

Nespresso Original Line Caffeine Content

Nespresso does not provide much information about the caffeine content on its website. In most OriginalLine capsules, caffeine ranges from 55 to 65 mg. However, espresso and lungo pods have different amounts of caffeine content.

Nespresso VertuoLine Caffeine Content.

Nespresso has worked impressively to secure their information about the VertuoLine capsules and caffeine content. However, there is related information provided on their website.

The VertuoLine pods are larger and only used with the Nespresso VertuoLine machine. These capsules have more caffeine per pod than an OriginalLine and have a wide range of variety to choose from.

The Nespresso VertuoLine machine works with a barcode on the capsule’s perimeter. The barcode identifies the type of capsule inserted and adds an adequate amount of water.

What about the pour? Espresso vs. Lungo

The Nespresso OriginalLine has two capsule ranges, Espresso and Lungo. In most Nespresso machines, you will find two buttons representing single or double cups. You can use these buttons to dispense the water. You are familiar with espresso as it is the base of most coffee drinks such as Cappuccino, Flat White, and Latte.

Lungo is one of the most famous coffee in European countries. Also known as stretched coffee, lungo is a shot of black coffee added directly to hot water. The coffee extraction process is the same as espresso, but lungo has more pouring size.

An espresso drink has a basic size (40mls), and a lungo has a basic pour size (110 ml). In an espresso, the caffeine shots range from 60 to 80 mg, whereas, in a lungo, it is 75 to 95 mg.

It would be best not to use an espresso capsule to make a lungo. Each capsule has specific coffee blends and flavors combined with the extraction process. If you try to slow down the extraction process of the espresso capsule, it will create a weak coffee.

On the other hand, if you try to extract a lungo capsule under high pressure, it will ruin its taste.

The Nespresso Intensity Scale

You can scale caffeine in the Nespresso pod with its body, bitterness, roasting, and flavors. Intensity is the roasting of the caffeine ratio from lighter to a higher level.

The two main elements that contribute to the caffeine content of a Nespresso capsule are the dark roasting and balance of Robusta to arabica coffee. Coffee pods made with Robusta beans have higher caffeine than Arabica beans.

If you extract your pod for a long time, it will surely pull out more caffeine and change the taste of your coffee. You can learn about the caffeine in the Nespresso pod by looking at the nutrition information and the ingredients mentioned on the capsule packet.

Which Espresso-sized pods are the best options for the heaviest dose of caffeine?

For the heaviest amount of caffeine, OriginalLine is a better option than VertuoLine. Arpeggio, Altissio, and Diavolitto are the best choices for the most serious caffeine shots in the OriginalLine. Solelio, Stromio, Voltesso are the caffeine pods of the VertuoLine with the heaviest caffeine content.

For a stronger coffee experience, you can use a reusable Nespresso pod. Fill out the pods with the highest caffeine content ground coffee. Caffeine consumption brings health benefits such as alertness and improves brain function and memory.

Higher caffeine consumption can cause adverse effects such as anxiety, insomnia, muscle breakdown, high blood pressure, and rapid heart rate. It would help if you tried to consume caffeine in moderation and monitor your daily consumption.

6 Simple Descale Nespresso Machine Steps

Everyone loves the ease and convenience of a Nespresso coffee machine. So naturally, great equipment plays a vital role in providing a great coffee experience.

But with great equipment comes maintenance. Like any hardworking coffee dispensing unit, you will have to clean your Nespresso machine after some time of use periodically.

Old coffee elements, natural oil of ground coffee, or water elements can build over time, making your Nespresso coffee expectations fall short. Fortunately, the brand has integrated a descaling process, ensuring the machine runs properly.

So, are you looking for steps to descale Nespresso machine lines?

All you need to do is find the instructions for your device, gather some clean water, and go through the descaling process periodically.

This article will cover what scale is, how it builds up, and what you can do about it for your specific Nespresso coffee maker.

What is Scale?

The word scale relates to mineral buildups and deposits left behind over time from hard water after the continued use of a coffee machine. These mineral deposits form layers that build upon themselves and clog the water line.

Using tap water to fill the water reservoir may scale your lines faster. For example, choose filtered fresh water over tap water every time you drink coffee to slow down scale buildup.

This buildup does not necessarily mean your water is not safe to drink, nor does it mean you should use distilled water for drinking coffee(please don't). Instead, you will need to clean out the scale through a process known as descaling. For the process of descaling, clean water works best, but you can choose distilled water for a deeper clean.

What is the Descaling Process?

All coffee machines, including models by Nespresso, have water lines subject to clogs from mineral deposits left behind as water cycles through. The descaling process maintains your water lines by forcing a diluted descaling liquid through the lines to break apart and clear away mineral deposits that stick on the edges. But before you start descaling your coffee machines, you'll need to understand your device better to clean it correctly.

Before You Start Descaling Your Nespresso Machine

Have two things handy before you descale your Nespresso machine: the owner's manual and the descaling liquid.

The manual will help you access the descaling modes between different models. The descaling solution or liquid is the chemical you use to descale the machine properly.

Note: Each model is different. Follow the manual's descaling instructions.

Fortunately, we've got a cheat sheet below for all Nespresso models with videos and downloads so you can quickly enter and exit descaling mode.

Step 1 – Get your machine ready: Before you begin, remove the capsule, capsule container, and drip tray.

Step 2 – Fill your water reservoir with the appropriate amount of descaling liquid and water. Be careful while using descaling products. They use potent chemicals.

Step 3– Place a receptacle under the coffee spout area. Make sure to use one that can hold up to 1 liter of water.

Step 4 – Follow your specific machine's steps to enter descaling mode from the section above.

Step 5– Rinse and repeat: Reuse the solution after the flow cycle. Press the button again to start the descaling cycle. When this process ends, rinse out all of the tank's contents and exit descaling mode. Rerun it using distilled water without a solution. Refill it with distilled water to remove any leftovers in the machine, or you can also use filtered water.

Don't skip this step, or you will notice a sharp decline in the flavor quality of the next few cups.

Step 6– Exit the descaling mode for your specific model. Let the machine dry for ten minutes. Take this time to wipe everything down with a damp cloth, and wash and rinse any removable parts, including the drip tray.

Nespresso OriginalLine vs VertuoLine Capsules

Nespresso comes with two exceptional trademarks: OriginalLine and VertuoLine machines. If you want to know more, check out our guide on Nespresso VertuoLine vs Original Line.

When it comes to pods, OriginalLine brews espresso only while VertuoLine brews both espresso and coffee.

Both machine capsules work differently. For instance, VertuoLine machines use capsule-scanning technology, which operates with Nespresso brand capsules.  In OriginalLine machines, capsule scanning does not take place.

Personally, I prefer the OriginalLine machines because of their integration of 3rd-party brands.

Nespresso’s Intensity

Nespresso defines intensity as a coffee's degree of roasting, body, bitterness and how concentrated it is. It has nothing to do with the amount of caffeine in the coffee.

The intensity level of Nespresso ranges from 1 to 13. The majority types of Nespresso pods are found in the 4 to 10-intensity range.

1-4: The flavor of coffee is delicate and light-bodied.

5-7: Coffee is flavorful and well-balanced.

8–10: Strong scents and a full-bodied flavor characterize this coffee.

Tasting Notes

Like wines, coffee beans have many professional descriptors that determine how a bean or blend will taste.

You may be familiar with Colombian coffees, which have a medium body and rich caramel sweetness and nuttiness. However, Brazilian coffees feature a peanutty flavor, a hint of cocoa, and a lingering finish.

All of those characteristics are still rather basic, but Ethiopian coffees can have distinctly floral flavors such as jasmine or nettles, and they are more reminiscent of teas. Ethiopian coffees are also often natural or unwashed and have a stronger strength that leaves their mark on the tongue.

Nespresso’s Roasts

Nespresso capsules are not all made with the same coffee roast; different pods use different roasting procedures. Light Roast, Medium Roast, and Dark Roast capsules are available from Nespresso, catering to wide strata of coffee consumers.

Caffeine Content in Nespresso Pods

Caffeine levels in OriginalLines and VertuoLine pods are usually in the medium range, ranging from 60 to 90mg.

The amount of caffeine in the capsule is determined in part by the amount of coffee used in the preparation and the type of green coffee used in the capsule.

The Robusta origin has an average caffeine content of 2.4%, while Arabica sources have an average caffeine content of 1.2%. The caffeine content in decaf pods is less than 0.1%.

Nespresso Flavors

While the majority of the capsules on this list aren't flavored, Nespresso does offer flavored pods for both its OriginalLine and VertuoLine machines. The best Nespresso pods flavors include Chocolate Fudge, Coconut, Caramel, Hazelnut, Vanilla, and others for individuals who like something different.

Nespresso OriginalLine Capsules Overview

To make single-serve espresso, Nespresso OriginalLine machines only utilize OriginalLine capsules (shaped like a hat top). Depending on your machine, OriginalLine capsules can brew the following beverages:

  • 1.35oz espresso
  • 0.85oz ristretto
  • Lungo 3.7oz

Nespresso currently offers six distinct sorts of OriginalLine capsules, each designed for a unique espresso-drinking experience:

Type

Size

Attributes

Intenso

8-13 intensity

Ristretto Espresso Lungo

They are the boldest capsules Nespresso. Some of the capsules have Arabica (Arpeggio & Dhadkan), & some capsules have Robust and Arabica (Kazaar & Roma). I love Kazaar, which has a bold combination of Robustas from Brazil & Guatemala, and Arabica from South America.

Master Origin

3-13 intensity

Espresso Lungo

This highlights the ubiquitous origin of each region. It features Ethiopia, Columbia, India, etc. It varies from red berries to vegetal-grassy notes. My favorite is Columbia (intensity:6), and it has a washed processed Colombian Arabica with acidic and bursts of winey red fruit aromas.

Espresso

4-5 intensity

Espresso

These traditional capsules have low-end intensity. The best Nespresso espresso pods include Capriccio (intensity:5), Volluto (Intensity:4), Volluto Decaffeinato (intensity:4), and Cosi (intensity:4). My favorite one is Volluto which has a light fruit and sweet biscuit taste with a combo of Brazilian & Colombian Arabicas.

Lungo

4-10 intensity

Espresso Lungo

For an extended pleasure of espresso, go for the best Nespresso lungo pods like Envivo (Intensity: 10) or Vivalto (Intensity: 6). Lungo Nespresso brews more volume without watering-down flavor. My favorite is Envivo which has a dynamic duo of Indian Arabica and Robusta with a woodsy aroma and punchy bitterness.

Decaffeinato

4-6 intensity

Espresso Lungo

This beverage has the same attributes but without caffeine, such as Volluto, Frenzi Arpeggio, and Ristretto Italiano. My favorite is Frenzi Arpeggio (intensity:9) is a blend of decaffeinated Latin American Arabicas with dense, creamy, and cocoa notes

Milk Drinks

4-6 intensity

Ristretto, Espresso

These capsules withstand the addition of milk to your favorite specialty drinks. It includes Caramel, chocolate, coconut flavor over ice, Vanilla, Corto, Scuro, and much more. I personally love Cocoa Truffle (intensity:6) is a blend of Vibrant dark cocoa on a base of malted cereal.

Note: Any of these Nespresso pods taste great, but choose to your preferences

Nespresso VertuoLine Capsules Overview

Each capsule in a Nespresso VertuoLine machine is tagged and includes a different amount of beans ground at different coarseness and fineness levels.

You can't just buy any pod and brew espresso, coffee, or lungo - the pod or capsule must specifically state the type on the pod and will only allow that type to be brewed.

Type

Size

Attributes

Ristretto

0.85oz

a more concentrated espresso shot with a finer grind

Espresso

1.35oz

Lungo

3.7oz

brewed with 2x the water of an espresso

Gran Lungo

5oz

a Lungo combined with coffee, similar to Americano

Coffee

8oz

a standard brew

Alto XL

14oz

2x the caffeine of a standard coffee

Only VertuoLine capsules are used in Nespresso VertuoLine machines. The machine uses the barcode around the rim of VertuoLine capsules for two purposes:

  • Identify the capsule you're using and brew it according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Non-Nespresso capsules must be locked away.

VertuoLine applies centrifusion or fast capsule spinning. As a result, the crime in the beverage is thicker and foamier. I prefer the espresso Original Line machines, but everyone has their preferences.

Nespresso currently offers eight distinct sorts of VertuoLine capsules, each designed for a unique drinking experience:

Type

Size

Attributes

Espresso

4-11 intensity

1.35oz

In the VertuoLine espresso capsules range, there are just Central and South American blends. Instead of having a separate category for decaf capsules, the Decaffeinato Intenso is available. I love Voltesso (with intensity 4) because of its South American Arabica coffee beans. Its biscuity undertones and sweet scent are the best.

Double Espresso

6-8 intensity

2.7oz

These double espresso capsules double your happiness as well. These are purely Central and South American mixes. I love Scuro with intensity 8, as it is a Central American combination of Arabica and Robusta coffees with undertones of sweet chocolate and vanilla, with a smoky character.

Gran Lungo

4-8 intensity

5oz

Gran Lungo capsules have a mild-to-medium intensity that provides an extended espresso shot. Gran Lungo capsules incorporate African and Indonesian coffee. I love Fortado (intensity:8). Its Indian Robusta hits you full power, while the Colombian Arabicas offer cocoa and oak wood aromas.

Coffee

2-9 intensity

7.8oz

For a longer experience than Gran Lungo, try the best Nespresso coffee pods that include, Stormio boost, Odacio, Solelio, and more. I love Stormio (intensity:8), which is a well-roasted Nicaragua and Guatemala Arabica coffee that provides a variety of spicy woody and cereal notes.

Alto XL

4-7 intensity

14oz

If coffee isn’t adequate for you, then go for Alto Xl capsules. I love intenso (intensity:9) because of its dark roast with a lingering aftertaste that includes hints of brown sugar and highly toasted attributes.

Master Craft Single Origin

5-7 intensity

7.8oz

These capsules withstand the addition of milk to your favorite specialty drinks. It includes Caramel, chocolate, coconut flavor over ice, Vanilla, Corto, Scuro, and much more. I personally love Cocoa Truffle (intensity:6) is a blend of Vibrant dark cocoa on a base of malted cereal.

Crafted for Milk

2.7oz,
7.8oz

These capsules cut through the thick milkiness of specialized beverages. I love iced forte (intensity:6) because of its refreshing and strong taste. South American Arabica combined with Indonesian Arabicas provides a powerful scent.

Nespresso Exclusives

5-8 intensity

FAQs

Can Nespresso machines accommodate reusable capsules?

Nespresso capsules are not reusable. However, refilling is possible. Some individuals re-run their pods to recycle them. Some people recycle their pods by running them again. For all Nespresso machines, there are safe to use reusable pods made of steel or plastic.

Can Nespresso capsules be recycled?

Yes, Nespresso Aluminum capsules ensure 100% recyclability. You don’t need to do it yourself because of its recycling program. Simply get free recycling bags, and after emptying the capsules, either ship them back to Nespresso recycling facilities or drop them off at a local Nespresso boutique.

Do Nespresso capsules expire?

Technically they don’t, but it simply loses their aroma, optimal freshness, and flavor. Nespresso guarantees the capsules' freshness for a minimum of 4 months from the date of purchase.

What does capsule intensity mean?

Nespresso defines intensity as a coffee's degree of roasting, body, and bitterness. In addition, the coffee's concentration contributes to the intensity. The amount of caffeine in the coffee has nothing to do with it.

How are Starbucks pods different from other companies’ pods?

Unlike pods from other brands such as Peet's Coffee, Starbucks worked with Nespresso to manufacture the Starbucks pods. This means that you can recycle Starbucks capsules into Nespresso bags. This recycling part can not happen with the Peet coffee as it isn't a partner of Nespresso.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The ideal Nespresso pod or capsule depends entirely on your needs at the time. If you're feeling brave, try Giornio and see how you react to the coffee + floral notes.

Melozia from the VertuoLine conjures up images of delicious coffee, and it's my personal favorite. Range packs can help you try a variety of new coffees.
